LAUSD All City Honor Marching Band

Since 1973, the Los Angeles Unified School District All District High School Honor Band has been involved with the Tournament of Roses Parade and other high profile events

The band brings students from all four corners of our District together for one common goal, to represent LAUSD at a high profile event in the finest manner possible.

LAUSD All City Honor Marching Band

Representing the students of the second largest school district in the nation, the band is one of only four bands perennially invited to perform in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade.

Eligibility

  • Be a current high school student within LAUSD. No exceptions.
  • Maintain a 2.5+ GPA
  • Be a current member of their school's music/auxiliary program and be in good standing.
    • Students from schools with no music/auxiliary program must obtain their principal's permission.

Enrollment

  • Application:
    • All students must complete an application for admission.
    • Application is two pages:
      • Page 1 - Student information and required signatures
      • Page 2 - Transportation Authorization - To be signed by parent/guardian.
    • All applications must have a student, parent/guardian, teacher and administrator signature. Applications missing signature(s) are considered incomplete and will not be accepted.
    • Applications are due November 1, 2014.
    • No photocopied, scanned or faxed copies will be accepted.
  • Online Registration: All students must register online at www.laallcityband.com.
  • Students are to complete the entire page including an email address.
  • A free email account can be obtained through their school or by using free services like Yahoo, Gmail, and MSN.

Auditions

  • Overview
    • Drum Majors, Shields, Flags and Percussionist must audition due to limited spacing in those sections
      • Audition Date: September 23, 2017

    • BRASS PLAYERS DO NOT NEED TO AUDITION
    • Transportation WILL NOT be provided for auditions
    • Audition results will be released the week of September 29th, 2014
      • Schools will be notified first, then the results will be posted on ACB media outlets
  • Percussion Audition Process
    • Site reading while marching
    • Demonstration of basic rudiments
    • Solo Piece
      • School cadence
      • Warm Up
      • Personally selected piece
    • Students must bring their own sticks and/or mallets
    • Drums will be provided
    • Students can audition for two sections only (Snare, Bass, Tenor and Cymbal)
  • Auxiliary Audition Process
    • Students will be taught a routine then asked to perform in small groups
    • Students will be judged on
      • Poise, carriage and dance technique
      • Ability to learn routines
      • Perform in time with music
      • Work well with staff and student
    • Students are encouraged to wear appropriate attire for the auditions
    • Student must provide their own equipment (shields are provided)
  • Drum Major Audition Process
    • Student will perform a standard 䠰attern routine
      • 150ft x 70ft
    • Judging will be based on
      • Poise and carriage
      • Execution of commands
      • Use of baton
      • Timing and tempo
      • Whistle and voice commands
    • Candidates are required to dress in their full school uniform
    • Students must provide their own baton o Brass Players
  • Brass players do not need to attend the auditions. Students are to arrive on the first day of rehearsal.
  • Selected and recommended by home school teacher
  • All brass players will undergo coaching and evaluation during the first half of the season. Those students not meeting the minimum playing requirements by the end of the first half of the season will be dismissed from the group.

Q: Why do I need to register online for All City?

  • A: The online registration is a new component for admission to the All City Honor Marching Band. It will expedite the collection of studentథrsonal information for attendance and identification purposes, in a more efficient and accurate manner. Information collected WILL NOT be shared with any other party outside of the LAUSD.

Q: I auditioned or will be auditioning as a percussion, drum major, or auxiliary member but don૮ow if I earned a position yet. Should I still register?

  • A: Yes. If you are NOT offered a position in the group, your information will be deleted from our records.

Q: How do I get to rehearsals?

  •  A: Transportation will start the 1st Saturday of October, our official 1st rehearsal of each season. A bus schedule will provided with your application packet indicating the time and pick up location for your school. Please keep in mind that if another pick up location is more convenient than you school's location, feel free to use it.

Q: Is transportation provided for Auditions?

  •  A: No. Transportation to the audition will be the responsibility of the student, parent and/or teacher. Transportation will be provided starting with the first full group rehearsal.

Q: Can family attend a rehearsal/performance?

  •  A: Yes

Q: Can members of my family ride a district bus with me?

  • A: No. Due to district policy, only students enrolled in the district and with the band may ride the bus. Family and friends are welcome to attend rehearsals and performance via private vehicles. Directions to the different venues will be provided.
